The Pressure Equipment Directive (P.E.D.) Classification - Overview

The Pressure Equipment Directive (P.E.D.) serves the purpose of attaining CE marking for products intended for sale in Europe. This CE marking is also recognized in the UK, in addition to the UKCA marking.

“The government intends to introduce legislation to extend recognition of goods that meet EU requirements, including the CE marking, indefinitely, beyond 31 December 2024 for many products.”

To effectively apply the Pressure Equipment Directive (P.E.D.) to specific filters and strainers, it is imperative to classify the equipment into one of five assessment categories. Below are the categories:

Category IV (the most stringent)
Category III
Category II
Category I
Sound Engineering Practice (S.E.P.) - No involvement by a Notified Body.

These categories are determined based on various factors, including vessel type, service fluid, and fluid group. The classification process involves referencing specific charts designed for vessels, steam generators, and piping, categorized by the state of contents and fluid group.

Information Required for Equipment Classification:

Type of Equipment:
Vessels: Defined as a significant increase in volume relative to the pipeline (e.g., large Basket Strainer, Pressure Vessel, tank, etc.).
Piping: Defined as minor or no increase in volume relative to the pipeline (e.g., Y-Type Strainer, valves, etc.).

Service:
Fluid or Gas

Fluid Group:
Group 1: Classified as dangerous substances, including explosive, extremely flammable, highly flammable, flammable, very toxic, toxic, and oxidizing.
Group 2: Comprising all other fluids, including steam.

Classification Process:
Once the relevant chart is identified based on the type of equipment, service, and fluid group, the correct classification can be determined by plotting the following parameters:
Vessels: Volume against Maximum Allowable Pressure.
Piping: Nominal size against Maximum Allowable Pressure.

By following this systematic approach, manufacturers can ensure compliance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (P.E.D.) and achieve the necessary certification for marketing their products in Europe and the UK.
